Sales Tax for Online Sellers
Online sellers must collect sales tax on sales of finished products. While marketplaces like Etsy and Amazon automatically collect and remit sales tax for you, storefronts such as Shopify do not, making it your responsibility to manage sales tax.
B2B Sales Tax Exemption
Transactions between your business and Artelo, a business with nexus in Kentucky, qualify for a sales tax exemption. Kentucky allows an Out-of-State Purchase Exemption Certificate, which exempts Artelo from sales tax remittance and frees your business from paying sales tax on orders. Companies working with Artelo are advised to obtain a resale certificate in their respective states.
Canada
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is applied to most goods and services sold or provided in Canada. In New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Prince Edward Island, the GST has been integrated with the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) to form the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). PST, like QST (Quebec’s version of PST), is a provincial tax collected on most goods and services sold or provided in the respective provinces.
Marketplaces such as Etsy and Amazon handle the remittance of Canadian sales tax on your behalf. However, on platforms like Shopify, the responsibility of collecting and remitting Canadian sales tax falls on you as the seller.
For transactions with Artelo, both GST/HST and QST/PST are charged based on the destination province in Canada. The rates vary from 5% to 15% depending on the applicable tax jurisdiction. These taxes are automatically applied to transactions with Artelo based on the transaction value and the destination province of the order.

Non-resident businesses in Canada can register for a Canadian NRI number to claim back GST, reducing annual sales tax payable. Artelo provides an end-of-year summary to facilitate GST credit claims. Contact Artelo for assistance in setting up tax compliance within Canada.
Artelo shipments from the US to Canada should not be charged duties as per USCMA since our products are produced within the United States.

Duties & Taxes
We currently employ a Delivered Duty Unpaid (DDU) policy to handle international duties and taxes. Under DDU, the responsibility for paying import duties, taxes, and fees falls on the package recipient in the destination country. This means that your customers in countries outside of the United States and Canada are responsible for paying these charges upon receipt of the shipment. We will eventually roll out VAT calculations and withholding. In the meantime, the best practice would be to alert your international customers on the potential for duties and taxes upon arrival of the order at their doorstep.
